About Hot Meals

Our Mission

To provide nutritious, freshly prepared hot meals to seniors aged 60 and over who are unable to secure a hot meal due to illness, injury, or living alone, thereby promoting health, dignity, and independence within the Danville and East Knox communities.

About the Program

Sanctuary Community Action has proudly served seniors in Eastern Knox County since 2004 through its Hot Meals Program. This initiative supports individuals 60 years and older living in the Danville and East Knox School districts who may face challenges in preparing or obtaining hot, nutritious meals. their goals.

Who We Serve

  •  Seniors aged 60 and older
  • No income restrictions
  • Residents of Danville and East Knox school districts within Knox County

How the Program Works

  • Meals are freshly cooked daily in the licensed kitchen of Danville Methodist Church, with no frozen meals served.
  • Hot lunches are prepared and delivered directly to clients’ homes Monday through Friday.
  • Delivery is carried out by a team of 14 to 16 community volunteers, mostly retired residents, each assigned specific routes.
  • Drivers receive a stipend and mileage reimbursement within IRS limits.

Funding and Support

  • Primarily funded by the Knox County Senior Services Levy, which allocates a portion of property tax revenues county-wide.
  • Sanctuary Community Action submits an annual budget request to the Knox County Commissioners each January to secure funding for the program year (April 1 – March 31).
  • Quarterly reports track program reach, funding received, and financial expenditures to maintain transparency and accountability.
  • While clients are encouraged to contribute a voluntary $2 stipend per meal to help cover unexpected expenses and extend the program’s reach, no one is refused service for inability to pay.
